Randy Travis Pleads Not Guilty: A Look Into His Recent Troubles
Randy Travis pleaded not guilty to the simple assault charges on Friday. The charges stem from an alleged altercation in a church parking lot with the husband of Travis's current fiancee. In a Plano, TX courtroom Randy requested a jury trial for the matter.
Larry Friedman, Travis's attorney, told the Dallas Morning News, his client intervened when two men were harassing his fiancee and her 17 year old daughter. He says that Randy was attacked and merely defending himself.
It's not been a good year for the country crooner. Here's an outline of some of his recent troubles.
*On February 6 Randy was arrested for public intoxication while sitting in his car at a Baptist Church in Sanger, TX. He was placed on a 90 day probation after paying a fine.
*On August 7 Police in Grayson County, TX responded to a call that a naked man was lying in the road. When officers arrived they found Randy naked and smelling of booze. Police say that Randy had a car cash in a construction zone. When officers tried to apprehend the singer they claim he threatened their lives and was arrested for driving while intoxicated and retaliation against law enforcement officials. Travis posted bail and since it was in a separate county it didn't violate the conditions of his parole. Prior to the incident Randy walked into a Tiger Mart (convenience store) buck naked and demanded that the cashier give him ciagarettes. The clerk alerted the authorities and Randy left the store when he realized he didn't have any money to pay for the cigarettes. (Randy Randy Randy---you should always duct tape a $20 on your person when you plan to go shopping naked!)
*August 24 Randy was cited in Plano, TX for simple assault. Police responded to a call in the early morning hours that two men were fighting outside a church. One witness reported that Randy appeared "extremely intoxicated". Both Randy and his fiancee's husband were taken to the hospital.
*August 25 A pick up truck registered in Randy's name was found crashed in an abandoned field in Frisco, TX.
Travis has apologized for his behavior and says he is threw with booze. "Randy is no longer drinking any alcohol," Attorney, Friedman told the Morning News. "He’s committed to a new fitness regimen that includes a strict three-hour workout every day and a new high-protein diet."
I'm pulling for Randy. I hope he gets it together and makes some more incredible music. Randy really deserves a great deal of credit for his place in country music history. Not only has he had hits in the last three decades but he did so while remaining a traditional country music artist, not caving into industry pressure to pop or fluff up the music. I think Randy should be in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Without trying to take away from Vince Gill and Garth Brook's inductions, I think they were inducted prematurely.
